"Nutrition-sensitive agriculture (NSA) actors at a different level within the socio-ecological environment experience challenges that hinder the integration of actionable nutrition objectives within the NSA interventions to achieve optimal nutrition for all Malawians, as evidenced by the persistently high rate of chronic malnutrition and low dietary diversity. Within the Transform districts, the prevalence of childhood stunting is higher than the national prevalence (37%). For instance, in Dowa and Mzimba, the prevalence of stunting is at 39% and 44% in Mchinji. The utmost goal of the NSA interventions is to address the underlying determinants of malnutrition. However, barriers to knowledge, attitude, and practices (KAP) of the NSA actors in Malawi guided by the socio-ecological model (SEM) are yet to be elucidated. Therefore, the objective of the proposed project is to assess the barriers to KAP of NSA actors to inform nutrition and agriculture agendas and programs at different levels of SEM. This project is primarily aligned with the “food system governance, policies, and institutions” of the FoodMa thematic areas. Assessing the KAP of the NSA actors is paramount to recognizing the need for evidence-based policies for the development of effective NSA that address chronic and acute nutrition problems and changes in food systems in Malawi. The activities in this project will include; 1) mapping out the NSA actors at different levels of SEM (functional and structural analysis), 2) assessing the KAP of the NSA actors at different levels of SEM, and 3) examining the barriers to integration of NSA in programs at different levels of SEM. The proposed project will be done in three transform districts, Dowa, Mchinji, and Mzimba targeting NSA actors and direct beneficiaries (adult men and women) at different levels within the SEM such as policy, organization, community, and intrapersonal. The quantitative and qualitative (key informant, focus groups, and dialogue workshops) approaches will help to understand the barriers to KAP among NSA actors. Ensuring sustainability transform consortium partners at the district and community level will be part of the project and inclusion of the dialogue workshop will ensure multisectoral approaches to addressing malnutrition. Furthermore, the project will build the capacity of early career researchers and postgraduate students in leadership, project management, and research skills to produce scholarly outputs such as reviewed journal articles."
